We have a winner!
Posted on Tuesday, April 28th, 2009

Congratulations to Jennifer K, the lucky winner of the FINDERS KEEPERS in store giveaway!

Jennifer's ballot was randomly drawn by my mom on April 26th.
We do draws the old fashioned way--no computerized generators, just one big mixing bowl from the kitchen, a pile of cardboard ballots all shaken and stirred, and the Flying Fickle Finger of Fate reaches in, grabs a ballot, and there it is!
Thank you everyone, for playing along. I love contests, and it is always fun to give someone something for nothing. I really like this contest, because the actual prize given out is pre-determined not by me, but by the winner herself/himself.

And now we begin collecting ballots for next year--Good Luck!

Number 5!
Posted on Sunday, April 26th, 2009

We made it!
5 years as a business, and,

thanks to you, I'm still in the game.

Tonight I will draw a winner from my ballot contest. This is an annual tradition, one way for me to acknowledge the most important element in my business: The Customer.
The contest is an ongoing thing at THE FINDERS KEEPERS SHOP, and newsletter subscribers are entered (one time each) automatically.
When you make a purchase at the shop, you get to choose anything in the shop you'd like to win--and if your ballot gets drawn--you win it!! A gift certificate is the default prize for people who haven't specified.
This draw happens once a year--April 26th, the day I registered as a business.

So, number 5, pleased to meet you.
You are the year I've had my sights set on for so long. Word on the street is that the majority of startups will fail before they ever get to #5, so this is truly an honor.

Keep your eyes peeled for my Grand Opening to launch the new shop--it will also be a time to celebrate #5 and all the wonderful people who've helped me get here.
For now, here's a peek at what was happening yesterday:

A Night to Remember
Posted on Wednesday, April 22nd, 2009

It Happened just now...Spring arrived in Cape Breton.
The peepers are out.
Little froggies singing that ol familiar tune that never ceases to amaze, delight and stir up fond memories of my childhood.
Tonight as I left the workshop, I was greeted by a balmy breeze and peep-peep-peeps that told me it won't be long now: my favorite season, Spring, will soon give way to Summer.
I pledged to be vigilant so's I don't miss a thing...my second favorite thing to wait for, after the peepers, are the apple blossoms, but those are quite a ways off--and that's OKAY! The more drawn out, the better!
Happy Spring, Cape Breton!

Redux in review
Posted on Sunday, April 19th, 2009

Oh me!
only a week left for Redux at CBU before it comes down, and I still haven't posted a review of opening night--zoiks!
The details of the night that kicked off my first ever "real gallery show" will be with me for a long time.
Frockery
Teena Marie and I and my mom all wore custom made jewelry, all found objects of course, made just to mark the special event. Teena created her own from an amazing assortment of odds and ends all in a beautiful soft earthy patina palette. I made Mom's necklace from bits of scrap leather, my grandfather's scrap copper wire, and colored beads. Mom's earrings used up some of the pennies leftover from my Barn Owl painting. And my necklace was old craft paintbrush handles that I like to hoard. My bangles featured old buttons and old songbook titles.

Snackery
People enjoyed the special snacks: My Mom's homemade chocolate truffles and jello strawberry coconut confections-yum! Mom also provided fruit and berry pinwheel skewers which doubled as apt souvenirs of a fun evening. Thanks Mom!

Crowdery

Wow. You showed up! The night (and indeed the entire 2 years worth of work) would have meant nothing if we had nobody to share it with. The art is meaningless without the audience, and I was truly thrilled at the reception you gave our "odd little paintings". So heartwarming to mingle with so many likeminded souls--who knew there were so many Prufrock fans out there?
A pile of fellow artists and craftspeople showed up, and I LOVED catching up on what everyone has been/is up to. The one thing we were hoping to hear above anything else ended up echoing about all around us, "so much FUN!"
I had a huge grin on the whole night, to know you were really "getting it." Very neat.
Once I have photographed all the pieces, you can view them all in my Bras d'Or shop or online at http://www.lamoore-art.blogspot.com. And, yes, if you are in the market for owning your very own odd little painting, they are indeed for sale! (Except for The Readers, one of my faves that has sold and is going to a very cool home).

The comarderie and kinship we were lucky to receive go a long way toward counter-balancing the isolation and loneliness that often, unfortunately, accompany the creative process...Thank you to every single one of you who came to the opening, dropped in another day and signed the guestbook, sent an email of good luck or congrats, or offered general support--we sincerely appreciate all the love.

"One may have a blazing hearth in one's soul and yet no one ever comes to sit by it. Passers by see only a wisp of smoke from the chimney and continue on the way."
-Vincent van Gogh
