Supply, demand and seashells
Posted on Friday, August 11th, 2006
The time has come.
My sand dollar supply has finally reached a sad low, forcing me to raise the price of any jewelry incorporating this particular shell. I postponed the price hike for as long as possible, but the ever-growing, overwhelming demand for these (ie:I can't keep up)has left me no choice.
Starting today, the new retail price for the sand dollar pendant is $60, rather than the old $49. I'm not sure if the stores will adjust their prices, so you may still find them out there for $49, but only on existing stock.
Any of these places may or may not have some in stock:
Smart Shop Place, Charlotte St., Sydney, N.S
Smart Shop Harbourside, by the Big Fiddle, Sydney, N.S
Inverary Resort, Baddeck, N.S
The Water's Edge Gallery, Baddeck, N.S
Glenghorm Beach Resort, Ingonish,N.S
Cape Breton Centre for Craft and Design, Lyceum Building, George St., Sydney, N.S
Art Gallery of Nova Scotia Shop, Hollis St., Halifax, N.S
The Fudgery, Fisherman's Cove, Eastern Passage, N.S
Jenny Jib, Lunenburg, N.S
The Ridge Shop, Stewiacke, N.S
What now? Well, I always keep my fingers crossed that I am going to come across a beach littered with this coveted shell, but until then, if anyone has sand dollars sitting around collecting dust, *please contact me*!!...I am willing to pay $.50 apiece for good condition specimens, or trade merchandise for a substantial quantity. My other option is to purchase these in bulk from a seashell dealer, but I would really prefer to keep things authentic and use only locally gathered shells collected by hand, from the shore. I've developed a look-alike sand dollar, made from clay, in anticipation of this day, but it doesn't really fit the whole use-what-you-have theme of Finders Keepers...so I'm not sure what to do about that.
In other news, there is a new product that is creating its own little fan club already: the beachglass pendant...it's not in stores yet and hasn't been to any shows, but look for it soon. The initial small run has sold out, and there are orders in for more! I'll try and get pics up to the web soon.
Also! Did anyone catch me on T.V? The Cape Breton Centre for Craft and Design was featured on the Atlantic Canadian News program "Live at 5", and I had a little spot! hehe, fun it is to see my jewelry on the T.V...I was very proud of my little creations! (terrifying to see myself and hear my voice, but that's a whole 'nother thing!!) :D

Had to show off one of my recent/best beachcombing finds of all time: the petrified Pirate's Head! Sure, I dressed him up a bit with the eyepatch and the bandana, but he was just as pirate-y without them. Imagine my amazement when, as I left the beach, casually glancing at the stones directly on the path, this stone with a remarkable face grabbed my attention and beckoned to be held. The holding of the stone is equally remarkable for the shape, weight, and texture all conjure up scenes from your favorite pirate movie/Shakespearean drama...you can almost hear the poor guy's moans and pleas to be set free from his unfortunate curse!
This is a perfect example of why I love beachcombing...the element of surprise: you really never know what the sea is going to present you with...you could never set out with the goal of finding a perfectly chiselled stone pirate's head...you just have to show up and be open to possibility...it seems i am always given exactly what i need when I am by the Ocean...whether I am seeking or not!

but if you try sometimes,
you might find,
you get what you need."
